10 Things to Know About The Children's Learning Center
|
| 1. The CLC serves children from the ages of 1 to 21. 2. Currently, there are 250 children receiving services through the CLC. 3. The CLC is a division of the United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County which has been serving children for over 60 years. We were the first to provide early intervention services and that was in the 1970s ! 4. Two thirds of the students have physical disabilities, ranging from mild to severe; 1/3 of the students do not have physical disabilities- many have speech/ language delays. The name “Children’s Learning Center” was selected for the school to reflect the diverse student population we serve. 5. There are 3 divisions within the CLC: early intervention, preschool, and school-age. 6. All of our classes are structured on a 12:1:4 ratio, except our inclusion class, which is in the UCPN day care center and which is a 12:1:2 ratio. 7. A wide array of learning environments (classes) are offered including: Target Mainstream, Kindergarten, Inclusion, Intensive Augmentative Communication, Sensory-Motor, MOVE, Language Enhancement, and Pre-Teen and Teen Academics. Each year, specific learning environments are developed to meet the needs of the students enrolled in the CLC. 8. Our students love school and among the reasons are: Homecoming Day, Empire State Games, Pajama Party, School Concerts, The Prom, Cultural Unity Day, Science and Technology Fair, Art Show, and Spring Fling Dance. 9. Each student participates in Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Adapted Physical Education, and Library, in addition to receiving his/her related services. 10. Families are integral to the success of the CLC – We celebrate Sibling and Grandparents Days, and offer parent support and education groups.
