The main goal of this department is communication. Programming is directed toward establishing or enhancing communication through speech or an alternative mode. Individual programs are designed to stimulate pre-language and language development, both in comprehension and expression. Feeding therapy is also emphasized from the nutritional, social and oral development viewpoints. In addition to working with individuals and small groups, the speech pathologists work with the classroom personnel in providing special classroom programs, as well as consultation and follow-up activities. The completion of hearing screenings on all students is another goal in the department. By focusing on feeding, pre-language, language, speech, augmentative communication, and hearing, the department aims toward the goal of developing the ability to communicate for each student.
Speech and language therapy utilizes both push in and pull out services. Push in services allow the children to remain with their class during special events.
Speech/language pathologists help the children communicate everywhere they go.
The children learn to communicate in many ways. Augmentative communication offers some of the students a different kind of voice.
